Bugs Bunny is kind of like the Unabomber

I’m sitting in the middle of what I have been led to believe is an aesthetically perfect day. Skies the color of Nazi eyes surround gently dynamic shapes and shades of white and green. Noises of buildings being built stumble into my ears, through an audible maze of rustling leaves, plane engines, and bird chirps. A power saw slices through a wooden plank twenty or so yards away. The droning motor offers a suitable white noise that is somehow more than just comforting. A gang of lizards emerges one-by-one from the foliage – frenetic paranoia filling their eyes and features. They realize I am no harm and bounce up and down in invisible low-riders, flashing bold orange gang-signs at me defiantly. I flash my sign back and bounce my head in rhythm, wondering if they enjoy the new Lil’ Wayne album as much as we do.

Rubbing the bottom of my foot a little too hard on an exposed nail, I sit on the deck with my new friends. My thoughts waft with the hazel smoke lazily through the thinner fall atmosphere. (They both hit a leaf and dissipate.) Many things are missing from me, from this life. I almost feel guilty that I am not rich enough in what sits in front of me, both emotionally and financially, that I should be so demanding as to want more. That is the nature of human life, right?

Luxury is the mother of invention and creation. We used to eat carrots with our hands right out of the ground, but that wasn’t enough so now we have knives and forks. We even have tools to reshape the carrot itself in many different permutations. Cubes, slivers, wedges, chunks…. (Our lives as carrots?) We never really needed forks to begin with though now we have at least eight different types of spoons. We spoon tiny carrot cubes into our gaping mouths, and wonder about the complexity of life. So I must not be the only greedy one. Everybody wants more. No one is content to eat carrots out of the ground.

Except Bugs Bunny and the Unabomber. (I bet even the Unabomber used a fork.)
